6A State Preview: Friday Night Session

8:30PM: No.1 Richardson Lake Highlands v. No.15 Desoto
(Tre Johnson of Lake Highlands)
The Big Picture: After all the drama, upsets and craziness of the past two weeks the field has been whittled down to a final four, and the storylines could hardly be better. Top ranked Lake Highlands handled a tough road to navigate through region 1, where they will see an athletic Desoto group that managed their way through a wide open region 2. Beaumont United extended their state leading 33 game winning streak to get back to the Alamodome, where they will appear in class 6A for the first time after winning back to back 5A titles the past two seasons. In the opposite corner, San Antonio Brennan dominated the regional tournament in region 4 with their 2025 and 2026 prospects shining.
The Names to Know:
Tre Johnson - Lake Highlands - 2024
The consensus number one player in the nation. There’s a reason he’s drawn comparisons to the late Kobe Bryant in terms of his elite shotmaking. Lake Highlands is probably too balanced for us to see a 47 point Tyrese Maxey-esque performance, but you can never count that out as a possibility; He did just hit 7 threes on Byron Nelson in the regional final.
