Blue Zertuche’s SPC Wrap-Up

After being out with illness last week, Blue Zertuche returns to the GASO FastBreak to offer his thoughts/recap on the SPC title games from earlier this month.

Austin St. Andrew’s Secures Second Straight Championship with 58-50 Win Over Dallas Episcopal

Austin St. Andrew’s claimed its second consecutive championship with a hard-fought 58-50 victory over Episcopal School of Dallas.

The game was tight early on, with St. Andrew’s holding a slim 29-27 lead at halftime. The Highlanders found their rhythm in the third quarter, extending their lead to 40-31 in the final seconds before entering the fourth with a 42-34 advantage.

Junior guard Jayden Buchunam was the difference-maker for St. Andrew’s, showcasing his scoring versatility by knocking down three-pointers and finishing strong at the rim. Junior big man Coleman Elkins provided a dominant inside presence while also displaying his shooting touch from the perimeter.

Despite a strong effort from ESD’s junior guard Josh Lohan and sophomore Drew Guy, St. Andrew’s maintained control down the stretch to secure the eight-point victory and back-to-back titles.

Dallas Greenhill Captures SPC 4A Championship with Dominant Win Over Houston Episcopal

Dallas Greenhill left no doubt in the SPC 4A Championship, racing out to a commanding 25-11 lead in the first quarter and never looking back in a 79-64 victory over Houston Episcopal.

The offensive firepower continued into the second quarter as Greenhill extended its lead to 39-22 at halftime. Houston Episcopal had its best scoring stretch in the third, putting up 23 points, but Greenhill maintained control with a steady 14-point advantage heading into the final period.

Junior combo guard Jaxson Thompson led the charge with 22 points, while senior Dillon Watt added 20. Sophomore Eli Sims contributed 14 points, and junior big man Kameron Smith finished with 11 in a well-balanced attack.

Despite the loss, Houston Episcopal saw a strong effort from sophomore Alim Olajuwon, who poured in a game-high 24 points. Sophomore Aiden Fyfe added 16, while junior Reid Sasser chipped in with 11.

From start to finish, Dallas Greenhill was simply unstoppable, dominating on both ends of the floor to claim the SPC 4A title in emphatic fashion.

After 28 years of coaching/teaching, head coach Joey Sims of Dallas Greenhill wins his first state title.

“I couldn’t ask for a more dedicated, hardworking and coachable group of young men. They showed up everyday committed to getting better. The leadership of this group led by example and lifted the guys up when needed. This is my first state championship in 28 years of teaching and coaching. It was worth the wait and couldn’t have asked for a better group to lead us to it.”
